Sensors & Communications:
AN/AAR-57 CMWS

Description: The AN/ALQ-212 ATIRCM is a modular system developed by Bae Systems to defeat IR-guided missiles. It consists of the AN/AAR-57 Common Missile Warning System (CMWS), infrared laser and flash-lamp jam head, improved countermeasure dispenser and improved countermeasure munitions. ATIRCM provides automatic, passive detection of incoming missiles providing warning to the helicopter's crew or even providing cues to other on-board support systems. The laser is an innovative directional countermeasure that counters incoming missiles blinding its seeker instead of redirecting the missile with decoys.

ALQ-212 will be integrated into US Army's helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. Due to its modular design it can be integrated into other aircraft with less component parts. It is able to automatically detect incoming missile threats and defeat them steering a beam of modulated jamming energy onto the missile's infrared seeker.

On October 12, 2004, BAE Systems Information & Electronic Warfare Systems unit in Nashua, New Hampshire, was awarded a $484 million contract for the supply of up to 484 ALQ-212s to the US Army Aviation. These protection systems are scheduled to be delivered throughout the next five-years until 2009. In addition to ALQ-212s, the low rate initial production will provide associated spare parts, test equipment and technical support.
