Description:
IAI EL/M-2160 SPS (Self-Protection System) is an anti-missile self-protection system developed for rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft applications. SPS is based on radar technology providing continuous scanning of the environment searching for incoming man-portable (MANPADS) missiles. Once a potential threat has been detected and confirmed the self-protection system timely activates countermeasures to divert the threat.
A civil variant of EL/M-2160 SPS is available as the Flight Guard to protect commercial aircraft from terrorist missile attacks. SPS has been sold to over 15 countries and is in service with aircraft and helicopters of the Israeli Air Force. IAI/Elta Systems Group estimates that over 200 aircraft all over the world are equipped with EL/M-2160 / Flight Guard.
On 31 January 2006, IAI/Elta announced that an undisclosed customer signed an $8 million agreement for integration of SPS into Mi-8 and Mi-17 helicopters. The undisclosed customer aim was to protect those helicopters from should-launched missiles.
