AN/AAR-60(V)2 MILDS F

Description: The AN/AAR-60 MILDS (Missile Launch Detection System) is a passive missile warning system designed for installation on helicopters and aircraft. The AAR-60 consist of 4/6 uncooled UV (ultraviolet) sensors providing high resolution signals of potential incoming missiles, an external processing unit is not required. Each UV sensor weighs about 20 kg. It can be integrated with a wide range of countermeasures. The AAR-60 is exceptionally suitable against passive guided missiles, typically IR-guided missiles.

The AAR-60 provides a coverage of 360of azimuth and 95 of elevation. It works detecting and tracking UV plume emissions from the propulsion system of the incoming missile, engaging up to 8 targets simultaneously.

The MILDS warning system is being integrated on the NH-90 tactical transport helicopter and the Tiger combat helicopter as integral part of their self-protection systems as well as on other helicopters and transport aircraft. More than 4,000 units have been ordered all over the world.

In August 2004, the German Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement awarded EADS a contract to install the MILDS protection system on six CH-53 helicopters earmarked for crisis management scenarios. These helicopters will be deployed in Afghanistan with the German Armed Forces.

On May 18, 2005, EADS announced that the MILDS warning system was selected by the Australian Ministry of Defense for the Echidna project. The contract to supply the MILDS for Australian CH-47 and S-70A helicopters and AP-3C Orion aircraft was valued at 10 million Euro ($12 million). Australia ordered the MILDS for its Tiger ARH helicopters and MRH90 tactical helicopters in 2001 and 2004 respectively.

On July 17, 2006, EADS and the Indian Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the joint development of a missile warning system for the Indian Air Force. The aircraft missile warning system was based on MILDS AN/AAR-60 warner with a planned initial operational capability for 2007. The agreement also included the establishment of a local production line and the supply of 36 systems.
