LOAM

IOC: 2005

Origin:Italy

Contractor/s: Finmeccanica

Description: Laser Obstacle and Avoidance Monitoring (LOAM) is an obstacle warning system developed by Finmeccanica's SELEX Communications for application on rotary-wing aircraft. LOAM combines sophisticated laser and imaging technology to effectively detect cable and other obstacles which potentially pose a serious risk for helicopters. LOAM provides the crew with enough margin to avoid the aircraft collision with the obstacle.

LOAM is being developed for application primarily on Italian NH90 tactical transport helicopters. In addition to Italian NH90, other international helicopter programs selected the LOAM obstacle warning system. In October 2005 SELEX and Lockheed Martin teamed up to provide LOAM for the US Army's UH-60 helicopter fleet.
