Description:
BAE Systems Obstacle Cable and Terrain Avoidance System (OCTAS) is a day/night, all-weather, all-obscurant that enables helicopter pilots to fly safely and avoid obstacles. The system combines a radar cable detection (RCD) with TERPROM 3D terrain avoidance system also manufactured by BAE Systems. The pilot gets a visual warning using a display. This low cost system can be expanded adding new capabilities and sensors to meet a variety of mission requirements. BAE Systems introduced OCTAS at Farnborough international air show in July 2006.
The sensors suitable to be integrated into OCTAS include laser radar (LADAR), IR imaging cameras and digital maps. The system capabilities can be also expanded through a high-resolution, binocular, helmet-mounted, display system which provides 360-degree visibility. The binocular system is derived from the helmet-mounted display system used on the Eurofighter/Typhoon aircraft. Extensive tests have demonstrated OCTAS ability to see through fog, sand, dust, smoke, and other battlefield obscurants.
