Description:
The Scalp Naval is a derivative of the Storm Shadow/Scalp EG standoff missile being developed by MBDA to meet the requirements of the French Navy for a sea-launched land attack cruise missile. The next generation of French multi-mission frigates and the Barracuda-class nuclear submarines will be armed with the Scalp Naval weapon.
On December 29, 2006, the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) awarded MBDA a 910 million Euro contract funding the development and production of 250 Scalp Naval missiles. The French Navy will take delivery of these missiles to equip the FREMM frigates (200 missiles) and Barracuda-class nuclear submarines (50 missiles). The contract included the first production order for 50 missiles to be deployed onboard the FREMM frigates beginning in 2013. DGA will issue three additional production orders covering the remaining 200 missiles at an undisclosed date.
