Description:
Felin is a new platform concept to enhance the infantryman combat skills in the areas of mobility, fighting, communications, survivability, ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance), and logistics support. Other characteristics will be ease of maintenance and use, modularity, urban warfare capable system, interoperability, reliability and growth potential.
The Felin system will provide video in real time, combat awareness, IFF-capability and other advanced capabilities. Integration of GPS, optronic devices, weapons, laser, night/day goggles, navigation system etc. is requested in order to achieve Felin's objectives.
The Felin weapon system consists of FAMAS assault rifle, MINIMI machine gun, FRF2 precision carbine, light intensification goggles, infrared goggles, CCD-TV sensors mounted on the infantryman and FAMAS rifle, helmet-mounted display and communications suite, mission computer featuring USB 2.0 ports, individual power cells, and the protection dress.
One of the keys of the Felin platform will be the new FAMAS felin assault rifle. The Felin will be fully compatible with new armored vehicles being developed for the French Army such as the VBCI. The first French Felin-equipped regiment is slated for 2007 with two thirds of French infantry unit outfitted with Felin by late 2008.
In March 2004 the French DGA awarded a €796 million contract to Sagem for 31,600 Felin systems. Around 22,600 Felin systems are intended for 20 infantry regiments with the remaining 9,000 Felins to equip artillery, cavalry and engineering units.
