Description:
The Land Warrior is a modular, integrated fighting system designed to provide significant lethality, survivability, mobility, battle command, sustainment, and training to the US infantryman. It incorporates systems, components, and technologies without adding to the soldier's combat load.
The Land Warrior includes a thermal weapon sight, laser rangefinder, digital compass, laser aiming light, daylight video sight, close combat optic, helmet mounted display, protective clothing and equipment, and an integrated individual soldier computer/radio named MircroLight and provided by Raytheon.
The US Army intends to procure more than 34,000 Land Warrior systems through the end of decade. Land Warrior was designed to be fully compatible with other high-tech, network-enabled systems on the digitized battlefield.
On February 16, 2005, the US Army merged the Land Warrior and the Future Force Warrior Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) programs. This measure was originated to reduce development costs and to put new technology into the hands of dismounted soldiers sooner. General Dynamics C4 Systems was responsible for the Land Warrior and General Dynamics Land Systems was responsible for the Future Force Warrior ATD. General Dynamics C4 Systems was chosen to manage the merged program.
The restructured Land Warrior program will be the basis of US Army's Ground Soldier Systems scheduled for fielding in 2005 and expected to keep pace with Future Force through 2014. The spiral development strategy to be adopted by Land Warrior will see the dismounted soldiers equipped with a command system for improved situational awareness and communications. The next increment will provide Stryker battalions with the command system, integrated tactical-level messaging, integrated lethality, Stryker vehicle-to-dismounted soldier communications, fratricide avoidance and battery recharging
The Land Warrior program successfully completed a four-month field testing in Fort Benning, Georgia, during 2004. The Land Warrior was demonstrated compared to equipment used by US Forces during 2003-2004 military operations in Iraq. Follow-on increments will continue to improve ground soldier capabilities.
On 28 June 2005, General Dynamics was awarded a $30 million contract by the US Army to integrate 500 Land Warrior ensembles and Stryker integration kits into a Stryker experimental battalion. These systems were meant to provide improved situational awareness and communications between dismounted soldiers and Stryker vehicles, as well as enable commanders to see soldiers on maps and communicate with them using voice and data. Deliveries of Land Warrior systems are scheduled to run from March 2006 through May 2006.
