Description:
Mounted Warrior is an advanced combat helmet-display system intended for combat vehicles' crewmen that integrates wireless voice communications. It is being developed by General Dynamics C4 systems and Microvision under two combined contracts worth $2.7 million. The system was expected to display real-time operational data and video in future variants. The US Army plans to begin deployment of such a system on the Stryker eight-wheeled vehicle.
The two launch contracts for Mounted Warrior helmet were awarded on 28 April 2005. The first contract worth $500,000 was established to provide equipment for a Stryker battalion to evaluate the system. The second contract worth $2.2 million was a production effort for 165 helmets to the delivered to an in-theater Stryker battalion to get operational feedback that would ultimately help to improve Mounted Warrior design, .
The US Army used spiral development pattern to get the Mounted Warrior fielded faster. Spiral 1 development focuses on integration into Stryker combat vehicle while providing the Mounted Warrior with improved sun, wind and dust goggles and powered by a rechargeable battery through the vehicle's power supply. Further Spiral developments will extend thsi helmet to other combat platforms while expanding the helmet performance, for example through real-time data and video.
