AMX-30 is a Main Battle Tank (MBT) developed by GIAT Industries in the 1960s as a replacement for French Army's M-47s. Equipped with a 105mm gun as primary armament, it features greater firepower and lower weight than its predecessor. Its auxiliary armament consists of a 20mm cannon and a 7.62mm machine gun. It is powered by a 720/680-hp diesel engine which allows for an on road top speed of 65 kph. AMX-30 also features NBC protection. It achieved IOC in 1966 with the French Army and was deployed during the Gulf War in 1991.
AMX-30 chassis has been the basis for a recovery vehicle, engineering vehicle, self-propelled howitzer, anti-aircraft vehicle, bridge layer vehicle and even a nuclear missile launch vehicle. AMX-30 B2 was an improved version featuring an enhanced fire control system. In the 1980s France proposed a very improved variant known as the AMX-40 for the export market. In the mid-1990s the French began replacement of AMX-30 by Leclerc Main Battle Tank. More than 2,300 AMX-30s were produced for the French Army and export customers.
In December 2005, GIAT Industries was awarded an 80 million Euro contract for upgrading of 54 AMX-30 based armored engineering vehicles known as EBG. Under this program EBGs would increase their performance with improved mine clearing, earthmoving and digging in protection capabilities. Besides, modification would focus on armor, visibility, communications and ergonomics. Upgraded EBGs would be delivered to the French Army from 2010 to 2012.
