Description:
Crusher is an Unmanned Ground Combat Vehicle (UGCV) developed by the Carnegie Mellon University's National Engineering Robotics Center in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, under DARPA/US Army UGCV-Perception for Off-Road Robots Integration (UPI) program. Crusher is based on Spinner a previously developed UGCV under another DARPA/Army program. Overall, Crusher outstands by its all-terrain high mobility.
Crusher uses a six-wheeled, all-wheel drive, fitted with hybrid electric propulsion and skid-steered chassis. Fully fueled weighs approximately 14,000 pounds (6,800 kg) and accepts a 3,000 pounds (1,300+ kg) payload thus having a maximum gross weight of 17,000 pounds (7,700 kg). The vehicle's design allows to incorporate payload and armor weighing up to 8,000 pounds (3,600 kg). Two fully equipped Crushers can be carried by a single C-130H sized aircraft.
Crusher was unveiled in late April 2006 and is expected to undergo test series to validate key technologies that should enable unmanned ground vehicle to carry weapons and operate autonomously conducting military operations. This UGCV was developed within the Future Combat Systems (FCS).
