IOC: 2000

Origin:South Korea

Contractor/s: Hyundai Heavy Industries

Description: The K1 Main Battle Tank (MBT) was developed to meet the requirements of the South Korean Army. Its design is based on the US Army M1 Abrams and features a 105mm main gun coupled with a coaxial 7.62mm and a commander's 12.7mm machine guns. Low-profile, compact, armor protection, and high mobility make the K1 a very survivable battle tank.

The K1A1 is an upgraded version of proven K1 MBT featuring a 120mm smoothbore main gun with increased range over the 105mm main gun. In addition, the K1A1 also features hunter-killer capability through a commander's sight, and a new ballistic computer for improved performance.
