Oplot

Also Known As: T-84

Origin:Ukraine

Contractor/s: KMDB

Description: The T-84 is a derivative of T-80UD diesel-powered main battle tank developed by Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau (KMDB) for the Ukrainian Army and export customers. The T-84 features a new all-welded turret, improved explosive reactive armor (ERA), thermal imaging sight, digital fire-control system, a more powerful 1200-hp diesel engine, auxiliary power unit (APU), advanced countermeasures system, automatic muzzle reference system, and navigation aids. The first prototype was unveiled in 1994 and achieved initial operational capability with the Ukrainian Army in 1999. The T-84 main battle tank underwent evaluation trials in Greece in 1998, Turkey in 2000 and Malaysia in 2000.

The basic T-84, also known as Oplot within Ukraine since 2000, is divided into three compartments: front compartment for the driver, middle fighting module for the commander and gunner, and rear compartment homing the 1,200-hp 6TD-2 multi-fuel, liquid-cooled 6-cylinder diesel powerplant. The new ERA provides improved protection against both chemical energy and kinetic energy projectile attacks over the frontal section. Besides, the tank features enlarged side skirts to give additional protection for the hull sides and running gear components against attacks by short-range anti-tank missiles.

The turret-mounted weapon package includes a 125mm KBA-3 main gun with 40 rounds of which 28 in the autoloader, one 12.7mm KT-12.7 anti-aircraft machine gun with 450 rounds, and a 7.62mm KT-7.62 coaxial machine gun with 1,250 rounds. The T-84 can be fitted with air conditioning and projectile muzzle velocity sensor as optional equipment. The 6TD-2 two-stroke, multi-fuel, liquid-cooled 6-cylinder diesel engine, fuel injected engine develops 1,200-hp at 2,600 rpm allowing a maximum speed on-road of 70 kph.
