Description: The C-160 Transall is a tactical military transport aircraft developed in partnership 50/50 by France and Germany in the 1960s through the Transall Allianz consortium. The first prototype took to the air in 1963 followed by first deliveries in 1967. Production ceased in 1972 with 169 aircraft delivered to Germany (110), France (50) and South Africa (9). Production was restarted between 1981 and 1985 to deliver 33 C-160NG (Next-Generation) to France (29) and Indonesia (4). Turkey took delivery of 20 ex-German C-160s. The surviving aircraft in German and French air forces were upgraded in the 1990s to extend their service life until their replacement by the Airbus A400M aircraft.

The C-160 aircraft is powered by two Rolls-Royce Tyne turboprops, each rated at 6,000-shp, driving four-bladed propellers. The aircraft is able to transport a 16t payload at ranges of 1,800 km or an eight-ton payload at ranges of 5,000 kilometers. The C-160 can transport personnel, equipment, military vehicles, artillery and paratroops. The C-160G Gabriel is a Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) variant. C-160H Astarte is submarine communications relay aircraft utilized by the French Navy. The upgraded C-160NG features a fixed refueling probe and can be converted to air refueling tanker aircraft.
