Description:
The C-295 is a tactical military transport aircraft developed on the basis of the proven EADS CASA CN-235 aircraft. It features stretched fuselage, and a new powerplant (2xPW127G turboprop) providing extended range and payload over current CN-235 tactical aircraft. It can accomplish tactical and logistics support transport, airdrop, medical evacuation, maritime patrol and humanitarian missions.
The first operational C-295 aircraft was delivered to the Spanish Air Force in 2001. To date, Spain, Poland, Brazil, Switzerland, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates have ordered the C-295 aircraft. The small-sized C-295 transport aircraft will complement medium-sized C-130 transport aircraft.
The four C-295 aircraft ordered by the United Arab Emirates will perform maritime patrol missions. In the late April 2005, EADS CASA and the government of Brazil signed the purchase order for 12 C-295s worth 238 million Euros to replace Brazil's C-115 Buffalo fleet and to back up the C-130 Hercules fleet operated by the Brazilian Air Force. The C-295 medium transport aircraft was provided to Brazil under the CL-X program with the first aircraft delivery on October 23, 2006.
On May 4, 2006, the Finnish Air Force announced its decision to select the EADS CASA C-295 as its next generation tactical transport aircraft. The initial requirement of Finland was for two firm order C-295s plus five options to replace its aging fleet of Fokker 27s.
