Description: The Tu-330 is a twin-engine, medium-range, cargo transport aircraft being developed by Tupolev PSC on behalf of the Russian government for both military and civil applications. The next-generation cargo aircraft is due to replace existing An-12 and Il-76 aircraft which are reaching the end of their service life. Approximately two thirds of cargo flights within Russia fall within the 1,000 to 4,000 kilometers routes segment. The Tu-330 builds on the expertise gained in Tu-204, Tu-214 and Tu-330 developments. According to Tupolev, the Tu-330 will have a 75 percent commonality with Tu-204 and Tu-214 airliners.

The Tu-330 features a high wing provided with winglets. The high-efficient wing design is the result of the know-how gained on Tu-204/214 and Il-96M development programs. The aircraft is powered by two fuel-efficient PS-90A high by-pass ratio engines installed on underwing pylons. The NK-94 engines also proposed for the Tu-330 run on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Tupolev is studying the provision of western engines and avionics to export versions. The tail is provided with adjustable stabilizer and elevators. The landing gear comprises six full-independent undercarriages providing for operating in paved and unpaved runways of 2,200 meters long.

The Tu-330 will be provided with an organic cargo loading/unloading cabin equipment which translates into no need for airfield's infrastructure in support of such operations. Cargo compartment can accommodate pallets, containers, military equipment, goods, etc. With a maximum payload of 35 tons the Tu-330 is capable of cruising at 850 kph. Carrying a cargo of 20 tons the Tu-330's maximum range is 5,600 kilometers and carrying a 30 tons of cargo the range decreases to 3,000 kilometers.

In addition to the basic cargo transport aircraft, Tupolev may outfit the Tu-330 as air-to-air refueling, environmental monitoring, fire-fighting, patrol, and medical evacuation aircraft. The NK-93A rated at 20,000 kg of thrust is an alternative engine for the Tu-330 aircraft for military customers being considered by Tupolev.
