Description: The Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) is a US Department of Defense (DoD) program aimed at delivering 2.5 ton (LMTV) and 5 ton (MTV) payload classes diesel powered trucks to the US Armed Forces. These highly reliable trucks support combat operations and civil disaster relief. The FMTV program started in 1988 and approximately 34,000 vehicles have been handed over to military and government customers. Originally, the program's prime contractor was Stewart & Stevenson which was acquired by Armor Holdings Inc and now is a part of Tactical Vehicle Systems Division (TVSD).

The FMTV vehicle models include troop carriers, cargo carriers, vans, dump trucks, recovery vehicles, tractors, specialty vehicles and more. Moreover, the FMTV includes three trailer models, making it a highly versatile tactical vehicle family. Costs have been deceased thanks to 85% parts commonality across the FMTV family. Armor Holdings TVSD has developed advanced versions such as Hybrid Electric Drives, 9-ton Load Handling Systems, HIMARS, 10-ton dump, the FMTV 8 x 8 Flex-Frame and the Height Reducible Electronic Enclosure (HREE).

The Low Signature Armored Cab (LSAC) is a further version which offers crew protection from assault rifle rounds, land mines and artillery fragments. LSAC development started in 2003 and over 2,000 cabs are in service with the US Army as of early 2007. The LSAC has been designed to replace the standard FMTV cab which lacks of armor protection. A two-man team can remove and replace the standard cab with LSAC in just four hours.

The Medium Tactical Vehicle (MTV) is a high mobility 5 to10 ton class payload 6x6 diesel powered truck. The MTV vehicles also feature automatic transmission, and central tire inflation system (CTIS). Basically, the MTVs perform unit mobility and unit re-supply missions including the transport of equipment and personnel. Moreover, additional versions perform a wide variety of missions including cargo transport, vehicle recovery operations (wrecker), construction (dump), line haul (tractor), and airdrop missions using the Low Velocity AirDrop (LVAD) model.

The MTV series includes the M1083A1 standard cargo, M1084A1 standard cargo with MHE, M1085A1 long cargo, M1086A1 long cargo with MHE, M1087A1 expansible van, M1088A1 5 ton tractor, M1089A1 wrecker, M1090A1 5 ton dump, M1092A1 5 ton chassis, M1095 5 ton trailer, M1096A1 5 ton long chassis, XM1148 LHS 9 ton load handling system, a 10 ton long cargo version, and M1157 10 ton dump.
