Description:
The A-100 is a long-range 300mm multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) developed to meet the requirements of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The A-100 MLRS development was inspired on the impressive Smerch MLRS deployed by the Soviet Union Army. The weapon system is intended to defeat armored formations and other targets at longer ranges than existing artillery systems. The PLA began the A-100 development in the late 1990s and the fielding in the early 2000s. The Chinese corporation CPMIEC is marketing the A-100 for export customers.
The A-100 weapon system is based on a 8x8 high mobility armored chassis capable of a top speed of 60 kilometers per hour on road. The rockets fired by the A-100 are spin-stabilized and feature a sophisticated navigation system. With a range of approximately 85 kilometers A-100 rockets may effectively engage armored targets on-the-move using a heat seeker. Each rocket carries more than 200kg of both anti-personnel and anti-armor sub-munitions. Each PLA's A-100 battery consists of six to nine launch vehicles; six to nine replenishment vehicles and a command post vehicle.
