Description:
The Arrowhead XR (eXtended Range) is an improved version of proven TADS/PNVS targeting and navigation system designed for the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter. It will provide performance 150% improved over current TADS/PNVS, reliability will increase more than 150%, target detection range will increase about 40%, and maintenance actions will be reduced 60%. The new system has an estimated service life of about 20 years.
The US Army plans to install the Arrowhead XR system in both the AH-64A and AH-64D attack helicopters. The Arrowhead incorporates technology developed under the Comanche advanced attack helicopter program. It comprises laser, IR camera and CCD-TV camera.
In December 2003, Team Apache Systems was awarded a $260 million contract for the first 55 Arrowhead systems with deliveries beginning in March 2005. The US Army intends to buy 704 Arrowhead targeting systems to outfit its AH-64s fleet by 2011. Arrowhead sensor suite will be provided to foreign customers operating the AH-64 attack helicopter.
Lockheed-Martin was awarded Arrowhead Lot 2 follow-on production contract valued at $246 million on January 26, 2005. The contract funds production of 97 Arrowheads, also known as Modernized Target Acquisition and Designation Sight/Pilot Night Vision Sensor (M-TADS/PNVS), for the US Army and foreign military sales customers. The Lot 2 deliveries were planned to begin in July 2006. The first Arrowhead was delivered to the US Army on May 10, 2005, and the first AH-64A equipped with such a system was expected to be fielded in June 2005.
Early in October 2005, Lockheed Martin announced that was awarded a $75 million contract for 13 M-TADS/PNVS by the US Army to equip the AH-64D Apache Longbow aircraft. Deliveries were set to begin in early 2007 and completed by early 2008.
In June 2006, the US Army Aviation and Missile Command awarded Lockheed Martin the Lot 3 follow-on production contract for the Arrowhead targeting and navigation sensor. The Lot 3 contract was valued at $386 million and authorized production of 219 Arrowhead kits plus spares for the United States Army and Foreign Military Sales (FMS) countries. The final Arrowhead kit under this contract was planned for delivery in December 2010.
