Description: The SSGN program calls for the conversion of the first 4 Ohio submarines to the SSGN tactical role. Each SSGN will be armed with 154 Tactical Tomahawk missiles and will be capable to accommodate up to 102 special operations troops and two ASDS mini-submarines. The SSGN submarines will provide land-attack capability, as well as infiltration and exfiltration of special operations forces in enemy territory.

Twenty-two out of 24 missile-tubes of each Ohio-submarine will accommodate a MAC container. Each MAC will contain up to 7 Tomahawk missiles. In addition, the US Navy hopes that MAC will be compatible with other missiles available in the near term. The remaining 2 missile-tubes will be used to accommodate the ASADS mini-submarines.

The SSBN 726 USS Ohio submarine will be operational as SSGN beginning in 2007. The SSBN 727 USS Michigan, SSBN 728 USS Florida and SSBN 729 USS Georgia have been scheduled for conversion but no in-service date has been released. The SSGN conversion program is worth $983 million and was initiated in September 2002.

Electric Boat Corporation received a $149 million contract for conversion of USS Michigan from Ohio class ballistic submarine SSBN to Ohio class guided missile submarine SSGN on January 28, 2005.

In October 2005 General Dynamics Electric Boat was awarded a $162 million contract in support of conversion of USS Georgia (SSBN 729) from a Trident ballistic-missile submarine into SSGN tactical strike-missile and special operations forces carrier. The conversion work on SSGN 729 was expected to be complete by September 2007. As of October 2005 the US Navy's SSGN program was valued at $1.4 with all options exercised.
