Description:
The SSN 688 Los Angeles-class attack submarines were designed to provide escort for carrier strike groups and hunter-killer capability against soviet ballistic submarines. The end of the Cold War has involved the nuclear attack submarines to counter Third World countries non-nuclear submarines that eventually could threaten sea line of communications.
In addition to the attack and escort role, the Los Angeles-class submarines can assume intelligence collection, special forces delivery, and land-attack missions.
The SSN 719 USS Providence was the first Los Angeles-class submarine to accommodate 12 Vertical Launch Systems (VLS) for Tomahawk cruise missiles. These submarines also feature an upgraded nuclear reactor core.
