Description: The SSN 688 Los Angeles-class attack submarines were designed to provide escort for carrier strike groups and hunter-killer capability against soviet ballistic submarines. The end of the Cold War has involved the nuclear attack submarines to counter Third World countries non-nuclear submarines that eventually could threaten sea line of communications.
In addition to the attack and escort role, the Los Angeles-class submarines can assume intelligence collection, special forces delivery, and land-attack missions.
The Improved Los Angeles-class submarines, starting with SSN 751, are quieter, incorporate a new sonar combat suite, and their diving planes have moved from the sail to the bow. The sail in these submarines has been strengthened for breaking through ice. Improved Los Angeles-class submarines are specially suitable for under-ice operation.
