Description:
Swiftsure-class nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSN) were built for the Royal Navy in the 1970s. These ships are equipped with five 533mm torpedo tubes that can launch both Tigerfish and Spearfish torpedoes as well as Harpoon and Tomahawk missiles. An Swiftsure boat was the first ever British submarine to fire a land attack missile in the 1990s during the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. As of early 2006 only four submarines of this class remained in active service. Astute-class are the replacement for Swiftsure in the Royal Navy.
