Description: The 9M729 is a missile system being developed by Russia as part of the Iskander ground-based missile family. According to the United States (US) intelligence community the 9M729 missile is basically a ground launched hypersonic cruise or ballistic missile with a range of several thousand kilometers and can be armed with a nuclear warhead. In early October 2018, the US claimed the new missile was breaching the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty limits and therefore its development should be halted. The 9M729 might be used to hit targets throughout Western Europe with tactical nuclear warheads in the event of war with NATO.
In January 2019 the Russian Armed Forces unveiled the 9M729 missile as an improved successor to the 9M728 missile with a maximum range of 480 kilometers and a minimum range of 50 kilometers. The warhead and guidance system have been upgraded with the missile being longer (up to 53 centimeters) than its predecessor. A single Iskander ground platform can carry four 9M729 missiles but requires some modifications due to the missile's increased length.
