Description: The DF-21, also known as CSS-5 East Wind, is a Chinese mobile Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) capable of delivering a 600 kg payload over ranges of 1,800 kilometers. It is based on solid propellant two-stage missile layout and stored inside a sealed canister. It can be equipped with either a nuclear or conventional warhead. DF-21 is also referred to as DF-21A.
The DF-21 development began in the late1960s and its deployment in the late 1980s. It relies on a Tractor-Erector-Launcher (TEL) vehicle which serves as a mobile platform and thus provides enhanced survivability. More than 50 DF-21 missiles have been deployed by China to hit targets nearby China located in India, Japan, Korea, Russia, Philippines and Vietnam.
