Description: The DF-5, CSS-4 Western designation, is a three-stage, liquid-fueled, silo-based intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) developed in China. Its development started in the 1970s, performing the first full-range test in May 1980s and achieving initial operational capability with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in 1983. It has a maximum range of more than 13,000 kilometers and is nuclear capable fitted with a single warhead. The primary targets for the DF-5 ICBM are locations in the Continental United States (CONUS) territory. As of early 2008, the US Intelligence community estimate is that the PLA Second Artillery Corps holdings include 20 DF-5s placed in underground silos. As of 2015 China holdings include 10 DF-5 equipped with a single nuclear warhead. The remaining missiles were upgraded to the DF-5A variant.
