Description: The NSM was developed to meet Norway's requirement for a new anti-ship missile to use on fast patrol boats, helicopters, coastal batteries and frigates. The NSM missile guidance system will be based on an INS/GPS navigation system with an imaging IR homing head for the terminal phase and in-flight data-link. The long-range, subsonic NSM anti-ship missile will be provided with a booster and will feature an stealth airframe, countermeasures-resistant design, and an innovative fragmentation titanium warhead of 120 kg. In addition, NSM is provided with an Automatic Target Recognizer (ATR). This program began in 1996 with the signing of a NOK 1.6 billion development contract between Norway and Kongsberg. The latest program review (2004) increased the program developmental costs in some NOK 150 million totaling NOK 1.75 billion ($261 million).

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace was awarded a contract worth MNOK 200 ($30 million) from the Norwegian Defense Logistics Organization for preparation and start-up of production of the NSM. The contract covered two years and focused on fixed equipment mounted onboard the Fridtjof Nansen class frigates. The missile production is expected to begin in short term following NSM development phase completion.
