Description: R-12, SS-4 Sandal western designation, was a surface- and silo-based strategic ballistic missile with nuclear warhead capacity that replaced Soviet Union's R-5M missiles. Its single stage propulsion system was filled with storable liquid propellant. Due to its range of 2,000 kilometers the R-12 missile was able to hit more targets in western Europe than its predecessor. R-12 were deployed to Cuba in 1962 threatening the continental United States. More than 600 of such missiles were produced in the Soviet Union.
