Description: R-31 was a two-stage, solid-propellant Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) developed in the Soviet Union as a missile replacement for first generation of nuclear-powered strategic submarines such as Project 667A, dubbed Yankee by NATO. In the early 1980s a single Project 667A submarine was retrofitted with the R-31 missile. The Soviet Union withdrawn from active service such missiles in the late 1980s.
