Description: RSM-50 is a two-stage, liquid propellant, submarine launched ballistic missile (SLBM) developed by the Soviet Union to equip its Project 667BDR/Delta III-class strategic submarines. Each such boats carries up to 16 RSM-50 missiles. The United States and NATO refer to this missile as the SS-N-18 Stingray while the Russians also refer to RSM-50 as the R-29R or 3M40.
RSM-50 features intercontinental range of up to 8,000 km and the capacity to carry from 1 to 7 nuclear warheads also referred to as MIRVs (Multiple Independently Reentry Vehicles). As of December 2005, the Russian Navy holdings include 96 RSM-50 missiles armed with three nukes of 200-kiloton each. These missiles are fitting out six Project 667BDR submarines.
