Description: The RSM-52, R-39 industrial name and SS-N-20 Sturgeon NATO designation, is a submarine launched ballistic missile (SLBM) designed to carry 10 nuclear warheads. These missiles were deployed aboard the Project 941 class of nuclear-powered strategic submarines of the Soviet Navy in the early 1980s. Each Project 941 submarine carries 20 RSM-52 ballistic missiles. The RSM-52 was considered the Soviet counterpart to United States Navy Trident I SLBM.

The RSM-52 ballistic missiles will remain in active service until the Typhoon submarines have been retired from service by 2010. An improved version of this missile named the R-39UTTH Bark was under development to replace the current R-39 but its future remains uncertain. The R-39 missiles were retired from active duty between 1995 and 2005 with no planned replacement except maybe the Bulava missile system.
