Description: RT-21M was a two-stage, solid propellant, road-mobile ballistic missile based on the first and second stages of the RT-21 Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM). Western countries referred to this weapon as the SS-20 Saber. The RT-21M missile, called Pioneer, is carried on a Transporter-Erector-Launcher (TEL) vehicle. Originally it was deployed with a single nuclear warhead but the late models were carrying up to three Multiple Targetable Independently Reentry Vehicles (MIRVs).
With an estimated range of between 500 and 5500 km and carrying three nukes RT-21M/SS-20 posed a grave threat to western Europe during the late 1970s and the 1980s. The SS-20 crisis, which involved the Soviet Union and NATO, concluded with a ban for weapons of RT-21M type. In the late 1980s the Soviet Union began dismantling RT-21Ms.
