Description: The Storm Shadow (Scalp EG French designation) is a long range, precision, stealth, standoff, air-to-surface missile designed to destroy heavily defended fixed targets. It is a fire and forget weapon which can be fired from low to medium altitudes with a cruise missile flight profile. The Storm Shadow and the Scalp EG are exactly the same missile but with different subassemblies to be attached to French or British aircraft and secondary equipment.

The Storm Shadow guidance system consists of an Inertial Measurement Unit updated through digital terrain profile matching and GPS (Global Positioning System). This redundancy provides good navigational precision and high resistance to countermeasures. In the Terminal phase an infrared imagery homing head compares the actual scene with its preprogrammed target scene and selects the impact point to hit the target with high precision.

The Storm Shadow/Scalp EG are planned to be used on Mirage 2000, Rafale, Tornado, Harrier and Typhoon (formerly Eurofighter). It is provided with a high effective penetrator warhead, called BROACH, to counter extremely hardened targets. This missile has been selected by the armed forces of the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Greece and the United Arab Emirates.

A total of 27 Storm Shadow missiles were fired by British aircraft during Iraqi Freedom operation (also known as Operation Telic within British armed forces) in 2003. It was the first deployment of the Storm Shadow cruise missile in a military conflict and the first time the same missile saw combat. As of December 2004, more than 600 missiles have already been delivered to end customers.

On December 3, 2004, the final validation firing of a Scalp EG/Storm Shadow missile was conducted by a Rafale M operating from Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier in the Atlantic Ocean. The missile was released from 20,000-ft of altitude while Rafale M flying at Mach 0.8 achieving all the test objectives. That test marked Scalp EG qualified for use on the Rafale combat aircraft. As of December 2004, the UK-France long-range cruise missiles was already qualified for use on the Tornado Gr4 and Mirage 2000 aircraft.
