Description: The TaepoDong, also referred to as Taepo-Dong or Paektusan, is a family of long-range, multi-stage, ballistic missiles being developed by North Korea since the late 1990s with the aim to hit targets at ranges from 2,000 km to 15,000 kilometers. Eventually, the TaepoDong missiles could be fitted out with nuclear warheads providing an excellent deterrent against South Korea, Japan and the United States. Besides, these missiles are test beds for North Korea's cutting edge ballistic technology developments. TaepoDong has close ties with North Korea's space launch vehicle programs. As of early 2009, the TaepoDong program consists of three variants TaepoDong-1, TaepoDong-2 and TaepoDong-X.

The TaepoDong 2 is based on two- and three-stage layout and is intended to strike targets at ranges of between 4,300 and 6,200 or even 10,000-15,000 kilometers with improved technology and engines. The three-stage layout is basically an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) aimed at targets in the United States of America. The TaepoDong 2 development has been on hold following political pressure from the international community. It was tested in July 2006 but resulted in a complete failure. It could be equipped whether with nuclear, bacteriological or chemical (NBC) warheads.
