Description: The P166 is a light utility twin-engine aircraft developed by Piaggio Aero in the 1960s. The aircraft is suitable for the following missions: executive transport, air ambulance, multi-engine trainer, maritime reconnaissance, search and rescue (SAR), and aero photography. The original P166 aircraft was powered by two Lycoming piston engines which were replaced by Avco-Lycoming turboprop engines rated at 559-shp in P166-DL3 model introduced in 1976. The last P166-DL3 rolled off the assembly line in 1991 when P166 production ceased. The P166-DP1 is an upgraded version first delivered on June 13, 2005.
The P166-DL3 aircraft are used by the Italian Air Force as aero photography aircraft; by the Italian Coast Guard for maritime patrol as well as for search and rescue; and by the Italian Customs Police primarily for Maritime Patrol, Search and Rescue and Smuggling Surveillance missions. The P166-DP1 is an upgraded version from existing DL3s featuring PT6A-121 turboprops, Collins Pro Line II avionics suite, and surveillance sensor package including TV, IR cameras, weather radar and mission control console. The P166-DP1 was ordered by the Italian Guardia di Finanza.
