Also Known As
ERGM
Extended Range Guided Munition

Origin
United States of America

Contractor/s
Raytheon

Description: The EX 171 is a new projectile for US Navy's existing 5-inch guns and it is being developed by Raytheon. EX 171, formerly known as the ERGM, is a long range guided projectile for littoral warfare in support of the US Marines ashore. The technology developed under the ERGM program could be applied as well to the DD(X) land attack destroyer's Advanced Gun System (155mm cannon).

The EX 171 will be provided with a GPS/INS anti-jam guidance package and the XM-80 DPICM submunitions. The fleet's introduction of EX 171 projectile was initially planned for 2004. The final engineering flight test was conducted by Raytheon at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, in February 2005 thus an EX 171/ERGM IOC date is more likely beyond 2005.

The projectile features tails that erect after it is expelled from the gun and before the rocket motor ignites. Thanks to this layout, the projectiles can achieve stable flight, receiving updates from GPS satellites and developing in-flight navigational solutions to reach the target area more than 40 nm (75 km) away.

EX 171's future growth will enable it to perform anti-ship missions, non-lethal missions, to carry advanced payloads and accomplish medium range missions (non-rocket propelled). The Navy also seeks to reduce EX 171 costs through inserting advanced technologies and unitary payloads. Five-inch EX171/ERGM and 155mm Excalibur rounds will provide the US Navy with a new low cost, precision strike capability.
