Description:
The LU211 is a 155mm modular projectile developed by NEXTER, formerly GIAT Industries, to be utilized by 155mm/52-, 45-, 39-, and 33-caliber artillery systems using a modular charge. Fired from a NATO standard 155mm 52-caliber gun LU211 BB (Base Bleed) artillery shell can achieve a maximum range of 40 kilometers; 36 kilometers fired from a 45-caliber gun; or 30 kilometers fired from a 39-caliber gun. The LU211 HB and LU211 BB are the main versions of the LU211 projectile which can be transformed easily on the battlefield by replacing the HB kit by BB kit.
The LU211 155mm modular projectile has been ordered by several NATO countries and export customers. The LU211 round has been qualified for use by 33-caliber 155 AMF3 gun with a maximum range firing LU211 HB of 20.5km or LU211 BB 25km; 39-caliber M109A1/A4 with HB 19.7km or BB 23.7km; 39-caliber M109A5, FH70, AUF1 and M198 with HB 24km or BB 30km; 45-caliber GHN-45 with HB 27km or BB 36km; and 52-caliber Caesar and AUF2 with HB 30km or BB 39km.
The LU211 HE IM version is charged with XF insensitive explosive which translates into the artillery projectile withstanding small arms fire, artillery shells and rocket-propelled grenades impacts without detonating. The French Ministry of Defense ordered the development of this version under MURAT (MUnition à Risque ATténué/Reduced Risk Munition) initiative. LU211 IM was deployed beginning in 2005 with the French Army's CAESAR truck-mounted artillery system.
