Origin
Italy

Contractor/s
Oto Melara

Applications
127/64 Lightweight

Description: Vulcano is a family of long range 127mm projectiles developed by OTO Melara for shore bombardment by naval means. The 127mm fin stabilized projectile achieves longer ranges by means of a greater muzzle velocity and low drag implemented at the sub-caliber design, without rocket motor. This kind of ammunition can be employed by 127/54 Compact and Light Weight guns, and all the 5-inch/54 gun family.

Vulcano comprises three main variants: unguided multipurpose ammo capable of reaching 70 km; terminal guided ammo with seeker for engagement of surface targets at up to 70 kilometers; guided ammo with INS/GPS guidance for precision long range shore bombardment at up to 100 km. OTO Melara claims that a new barrel under development for the 127mm Light Weight (127LW) naval will boost the range of the guided ammo to 120 km.

Originally designed to meet the requirements of the Italian Navy, the Vulcano system has also been ordered by the Italian Army for its 155mm field artillery.
