Description: The self-contained Mid Range Munition (MRM) is a precision guided munition designed to be fired from 105 or 120mm guns. It is intended primarily against ERA (Explosive Reactive Armor) and APS (Active Protection Systems) protected battle tanks. Its flight control system has no moving parts which means high reliability and low cost, This also translates into being compatible with current generation of cannons such as the 120mm M1 Abrams' gun.

The MRM would be able to engage targets designated by the firing vehicle and targets designated by a third party. MRM munitions will be employed by the FCS vehicles (Objective Force) Mounted Combat Vehicles Block I. The MRM is based on technologies developed under the TERM-KE program.

The MRM-KE projectile uses a semi-active laser seeker for cooperative targeting, a millimeter wave seeker to autonomously acquire and track a given target, and impulse thrusters provide maneuverability to acquire, track and perform a direct hit against targets at 7.5 miles and beyond. The projectile uses a ballistic trajectory to reach the target area, then the thrusters will direct it to score a direct hit. A rocket booster accelerates the projectile to supersonic velocity before the impact aiding the long rod penetrator to pierce the target's armor.

ATK was awarded a $23 million contract on 21 March 2005 for work on dual mode seeker technology including semi-active laser and millimeter wave seekers in support of the MRM program. ATK also released that a flight demonstration test involving dual mode seeker was anticipated in April 2006.

Raytheon is developing its MRM solution known as the MRM-CE (Mir Range Munition Chemical Energy). MRM-CE projectile is fitted with a semi-active laser seeker (SAL) and can maneuver well beyond the line-of-sight to hit a given target. Raytheon's 120mm round will be available for US Army' FCS vehicles and as a potential spin-out to existing M1A2 Abrams SEP. The Raytheon projectile also features an imaging infrared seeker as part of a dual guidance system.

The MRM program is being developed and managed by the Army Research and Development Command (ARDEC) and the Office of the Project Manager Maneuver Ammunition Systems (OPM-MAS) at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey. Finally, Raytheon along with teammate General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems was awarded a 63-month $232 million contract by the US Army covering XM1111 MRM design and development. The contract award was announced on January 2, 2008.
