Description: The F-3 engine is an advanced turbofan engine under development by Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries for the Japanese Ministry of Defense. The new engine is intended as the main power plant for the twin-engine F-3 stealth aircraft beginning in 2027. The engine features compressor, combustor and high pressure turbine as well as computer-controlled architecture and thrust vectoring control (TVC). A test engine is planned to take to the air in 2018. The development program will focus on the feasibility of the engine for the F-3 stealth fighter. Japan may decide to power the F-3 with a foreign engine if the new engine does not meets the expectations for an air superiority 5G fighter.
