Description: The Merlin 1D is a further development of the Merlin 1C engine intended to power newest versions of the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy space launch systems. It was developed between the late 2000s and early 2010s following the success of the Merlin 1C engine. It burns a combination of RP-1 kerosene and Liquid Oxygen (LOX) to achieve a thrust between 147,000-lb and 190,000-lb at lift-off. The first flight was conducted in June 2013 powering the Falcon 9 space launch system. The engine also powers the Falcon Heavy space launch system. In both cases the first stage is reusable by throttling down the thrust to land on Earth's surface.
