Description: The RD-180 liquid fuel rocket engine was developed by Energomash of Russia to be the first stage for Lockheed Martin's upgraded space launch vehicles Altas III and Atlas V. The new engine is based on the RD-170/171 engines developed to power Energia and Zenit rockets. The RD-180 rocket engine as the first stage of Atlas III/V space launch systems develops between 390 and 424 tons of thrust for 311 to 337 seconds. To do so, it burns a combination of liquid oxygen and kerosene. Lockheed Martin announced its intention to order at least 101 such engines for use on Atlas III/V.

The RD-180 engine development started in 1994. The first engine burn was completed in summer 1996 and the first full engine burn in April 1997. Between 1997 and 1998 the engine was fired tested in the United States. In spring 1999, the engine completed certification and was ready for integration with the upgraded Atlas III launch vehicle. The first Atlas III rocket with the RD-180 engine at the first stage was launched in May 2000. The engine was certified for use on the Atlas V in summer 2001 with the first flight carried out in August 2002.
