Description: The AMAP is an advanced countermeasure defense system family designed to provide protection for armored vehicles against the latest generation of threats such as Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), Anti-Tank Missiles (ATMs) and medium/large-caliber kinetic energy projectiles. The AMAPS self-protection systems include both active and passive defenses. The passive members of the AMAP family combine various metals, ceramic and composite materials, formed into special shapes to achieve a high degree of protection against a given threat. The German Armed Forces AMAP program is being carried out by ADS GmbH as the prime contractor along with IBD Deisenroth Engieneering and Rheinmetall Defence with the systems being ready for fielding from 2010 onwards. The AMAPS is specially targeted for medium and heavy armored vehicles such as the AMV 8x8 and Leopard 2 tank.

The AMAP-B passive protection system consists of add-armor kits specifically designed to withstand the impact of threats such as ballistic projectiles with a caliber of up to 125mm, anti-tank guided missiles and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). The AMAP-B which stands for ballistic protection is mounted on the side of armored vehicles.
