Description: The AN/SLQ-32 is an electronic warfare (EW) system that provides powerful countermeasures protection for small and mid-size surface ships. The SLQ-32 systems feature a lens-fed multi-beam array that generates very high jamming power at continuous wave so that an almost unlimited variety of jamming techniques can be used. The SLQ-32(V)5 features SIDEKICK active jamming capability that adapts the previous feature through smaller, lighter and solid-state components. Overall, the SLQ-32 electronic warfare system primary goal is to to counter radar-guided anti-ship missiles. This electronic warfare system was deployed by the US Navy in 1974 as the AN/SLQ-32(V)1 onboard frigates and landing platform docks (LPDs).

The SLQ-32(V)5 provides full threat band frequency coverage, instantaneous azimuth coverage, 100 percent probability of intercept and simultaneous response to multiple threats. It can detect threaten radars well before they detect the ship. The active jamming avoids long range targeting of the ship deceiving missiles launched against the ship. The SLQ-32 also has an on-line library of emitters for rapid identification of the threat. The AN/SLQ-32(A)(V)(2) and the AN/SLQ-32(B)(V)(2) provide anti-ship missile defense capability to the US Navy. Under the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) existing AN/SLQ-32 systems were upgraded improving data processing to better correlate and display signals intercepts from the legacy antenna. The AN/SLQ-32(V) Electronic Surveillance Enhancement (ESE) upgraded capabilities were developed by the Naval Research Laboratory. ESE was designed as a single-unit replacement for the existing SLQ-32(V) signal processing elements to be installed on the majority of US Navy capital ships. SEWIP program will enhance processors and control consoles on surface ships through 2025.

SEWIP Block 2 upgrade added small ship electronic support capabilities, special signal detection, processing, network centric warfare capabilities, and display enhancements with automation to improve operator situational awareness. The first SEWIP upgrade was introduced in October 2004, and the second upgrade was expected by December 2005. The SLQ-32(V) ESE was approved for low-rate initial production by the US Navy in early June 2005. The SEWIP Block 3 will include improvements for the electronic attack by providing integrated countermeasures against radio frequency-guided threats and extending frequency range coverage. The Block 3 will be installed on surface combatants that have the existing active version of the SLQ-32.
