Description: The AN/SLQ-48 MNS (Mine Neutralization System) is a sea mine clearance system featuring a CCD-TV camera and a high resolution sonar to work in low light levels and highly turbid water conditions. It also features an underwater vehicle with a built-in acoustic tracking system and a powered umbilical cable qualified against entanglements with obstacles in the water or on the seabed.

Once a potential mine is found by the sonar of the mine hunter vessel, the underwater vehicle is released and guided by the SLQ-48's operator using the control console joysticks. After positive identification is made, can cut the mooring cable of a moored mine through an explosive cutter or can drop an explosive device near the bottom mine to be triggered by an acoustic signal later.

A total of 28 AN/SLQ-48 systems and 57 underwater vehicles have been delivered to the US Navy. The AN/SLQ-48 are deployed aboard the Avenger and Osprey class Mine Hunter vessels. The AN/SLQ-48 was combat proven during operation Desert Storm in 1991. It is suitable against deep and fast water mines.
