Description: The Barracuda is a mine neutralization system consisting of an autonomous, expendable unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) capable of operating in shallow waters. The UUV will be responsible for identify and destroy bottom, near surface and drifting mines. Besides, the UUV will connect to the deployment platform wireless utilizing a communications buoy. Modular architecture will enable future growth of kill mechanism, sensors and propulsion as well as the communications buoy. The US Navy awarded Raytheon a contract worth up to $363 million for the Barracuda mine neutralization system design, development, testing and deployment in April 2018 with a projected entry into service by November 2022. The key element of this new mine neutralization system is the advanced sonar technology provided by Raytheon.
