Description: The DART (Defensive Avionics Receiver Transmitter) is a fast jet Directional Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) demonstrator sponsored by the UK MoD. The technology demonstrator program is being carried out by an international team comprising BAe Systems, Octec Ltd, Lockheed-Martin, Raytheon, Radstone Ltd and Aeroflex Corporation with BAe as prime contractor.
The DART provides autonomous threat detection and tracking utilizing a simplified two-axis layout. The open-architecture will allow future growth incorporating new technologies and multi functionality. Installation on military fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft is envisaged as well as commercial and military large aircraft.
This system will be capable of countering current and emerging air-to-air and surface-to-air infrared-guided missiles. To date, only expendable flares were available to match that threat. The DART will enter final demonstration phase in the US and UK in early 2005.
