Description: The Guardian is a laser-based, aircraft-mounted, directional infrared countermeasures (DIRCM) leveraging combat-proven technologies from the military range developed by Northrop-Grumman. It is intended for use on commercial aircraft protecting them against man-portable, shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles (MANPADS). The most likely scenario which Guardian was developed for, is a ground-based terrorist attack using such a missiles.

The Guardian was designed, developed and fabricated by Northrop-Grumman under a US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) initiative and will be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2005. In the early 2005, Northrop-Grumman announced that it was going to install and flight test the Guardian on Boeing 747 and MD-11 platforms during 2005. Northrop-Grumman expects that Guardian will cost less than its military counterparts such as the AN/AAQ-24. The Department of Navy's Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasure (DoN LAIRCM) program scope includes installation of Guardian on US Marine Corps CH-53E helicopters operating in Afghanistan and on ship-based CH-46E helicopters.
