Description: The Orbital ATK Helicopter Active Protection System (HAPS) is intended to minimize damage caused to rotary-wing aircraft by Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) operating in dangerous areas. The HAPS system consists of an Engagement Management Module, a slightly-modified Counter Measures Dispense System, such as the ALE-47, and the Kill Vehicles (KVs) that launch from the counter-measures dispenser. The system identifies an incoming threat, launch and guide a maneuverable KV to a precise location and detonates a warhead to neutralize the RPG. All these operations are carried out within a fraction of a second at a safe distance for the aircraft and its crew. The HAPS KV is equipped with divert and attitude thrusters as well as non-linear guidance and control algorithms, and the fast-sync wireless command guidance link. Besides, the KV fitst within the standard envelope of flare and chaff launch tubes and can be employed against man-portable surface-to-air missiles (MANPADS). Orbital ATK demonstrated the HAPS KV cartridge released from the ALE-47 countermeasures dispenser in February 2015.
