Description: The High Energy Laser and Integrated Optical-dazzler with Surveillance (HELIOS) is an anti-missile weapon system designed to protect surface ships against missile attacks. The laser weapon system has a maximum range of approximately five nautical miles (9-10 kilometers) and can be used to provide targeting as well. The US Navy expects to deploy the HELIOS weapon system on its warships, beginning with destroyer USS Preble, starting in 2021. It is intended as the replacement for the Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) and the Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) weapon system. The early version of HELIOS will deliver a 60 kW laser for improved targeting that will escalate to a 5 00 kW laser when used as a weapon system by 2030.
